King Parrot

FAMILY NAME:    Psittacidae    SCIENTIFIC NAME:   Alisterus scapularis    SUBSPECIES:    alisterus and minor

SIZE:    42 to 44cm.   (17 to 18") tip to tail.

LOCATION:   Found down the eastern coastal regions and ranges of Australia.

BREEDING:   Breeding season is from September to January, laying from 3 to 5 eggs. Their nests are made in deep tree hollows, high up in the tree and lined with wood chips.

GENERAL:   The male has a red head, breast and underparts. The wings and back are dark green, with the wings having a pale green stripe. The rump is dark blue, and the tail is blackish/blue. The female has a green head and breast, and no paler stripe on the wings. The remainder is identical with the male. They form pairs or small flocks and are sedentary, preferring dense woodland and rainforests.
