Australian Wood Duck

FAMILY NAME:    Anatidae    SCIENTIFIC NAME:   Chenonetta jubata    SUBSPECIES:   none

SIZE:     45 to 60cm.   (1.5' to 2') tip to tail.

LOCATION:   Found over almost the entire continent of Australia including Tasmania, except in the very arid central west.

BREEDING:   Breeding season is from September to November, laying from 8 to 12 eggs. Both the male and female help rear their young.

GENERAL:   Sometimes called the "Maned Duck" or "Maned Goose" because of the ruffled feathers down the back of the neck. Generally they nest and roost in trees, and feed on grassland, although they do dabble in shallow water. The male is grey with dark brown head and mottled breast and black primaries. The female is also grey but has mottled underside and white stripes above and below the eye. She also has black primaries.
