Rainbow Lorikeet

FAMILY NAME:    Psittacidae    SCIENTIFIC NAME:    Trichoglossus haematodus    SUBSPECIES:    Many, 2 in Aus.   moluccanus   rubritorquis

SIZE:     28cm.   (11") tip to tail.

LOCATION:   Found down eastern coastal areas and tropical north coastal areas.

BREEDING:   Breeding season is from September to December. Nesting takes place in tree hollows, the nest being lined with chewed rotted wood. Both sexes build the nest and rear the young, but the female incubates the eggs.

GENERAL:   These birds inhabit rainforests and woodland and are adapting very well to suburban wooded areas. The main foods are nectar, pollen, fruit and seeds and sometimes insects.
